How to Automate Influencer Gifting With Shopify: What Can Be Automated, and What Should Not Be

·8 min read·By Abubakr Chan

Influencer gifting Shopify automation means the creator conversation, not a coordinator, produces the store work: the shipping address is collected from the creator’s reply, a $0 gift order is prepared with the variant they asked for, a unique discount code is issued, and sales on that code are attributed back to the creator. Only one step in that chain should still need a person, which is approving the order before it is created in your store.

Disclosure: Cheerful, the AI influencer marketing platform, is our product, and the specifics below describe exactly what its Shopify integration does today, including the parts it does not do. The same checklist works for judging any other tool.

Which parts of influencer gifting can be automated with Shopify?

What is not automated, stated plainly: Cheerful does not read tracking numbers from Shopify or send tracking links to creators, and it does not manage inventory. Shipping status (“it arrived!”) is picked up from the conversation rather than from your carrier. Your existing fulfilment, whether that is your own team, a 3PL or ShipHero, still ships the box.

How does a gifting order get from a creator’s reply into Shopify?

  1. 1You pick the gift products and variants when you set up the campaign. The agent can only offer what is on that list.
  2. 2The creator says yes and replies with an address and a preference (“the medium in green, please”). The agent reads both from the email, the way a coordinator would.
  3. 3Cheerful drafts the order inside Cheerful: name, email, phone, the address split into Shopify’s fields, and the matched variant. An order missing a required field such as a last name or country is held back rather than guessed.
  4. 4You approve it, either in Cheerful or from a daily Slack digest with an Approve button.
  5. 5Cheerful creates a real order in your Shopify store with the products priced at $0 and free shipping, tagged GIFTING-CHEERFUL by default (the tag can be changed per campaign), so it shows up in the same fulfilment queue as every other order and gift orders stay easy to filter out of your sales reports.

Why keep the approval step? An order ships physical inventory to a stranger’s house, and a misread address or the wrong size is the one mistake in gifting that costs real money. One click per order is a small price for that check; the typing, lookup and data entry around it are what the automation removes. In Spacegoods’ 400-creator campaign, 220 Shopify orders were drafted this way in three weeks.

The address from the creator’s reply is already on the order. Review it, pick or confirm the product, and send it to Shopify.

How do discount codes and sales attribution work for gifted creators?

Each creator gets their own code, created automatically when they confirm they are in. The discount is a percentage or a fixed amount you set per campaign (codes are created directly in Shopify, or through GoAffPro, which Spacegoods used for 89 codes). A per-creator code is the single decision that makes gifting measurable: a shared campaign code tells you the campaign worked, while one code per creator tells you which creators worked.

Cheerful then syncs your store orders and credits each one to the creator whose code was used, and the revenue shows up per creator in the campaign’s reporting. When an order carries codes that could belong to more than one creator, it is left unattributed instead of guessed, and you can correct any match by hand.

The honest limit: this is code-based attribution only. Someone who watched the creator’s video and bought a week later without the code does not appear, and that is usually most of the influence. Report code revenue alongside detected posts and reach rather than pretending either is the whole number; the full method is in track a gifting campaign from shipment to ROI.

What should you look for in an influencer gifting Shopify tool?

  1. 1Does it create the order, or export a spreadsheet for you to import? An export moves the typing, it does not remove it.
  2. 2Where does the address come from? A form link is a second ask that many creators never complete. Reading it from the reply they were already writing is the version that holds up at volume.
  3. 3Who handles the replies? The Shopify step is the easy part; the conversation that produces a confirmed address and size is where the hours go. If the tool only sends outreach, you are still answering every thread.
  4. 4Is there one code per creator, created automatically? Anything else means per-creator ROI is manual or missing.
  5. 5Can you approve before anything ships, and turn that on or off per campaign?
  6. 6Does it read your orders back? Codes that are issued but never matched to sales leave you with a count of codes, not a revenue number.

Setup in Cheerful is a store connection in settings (today most stores connect through the GoAffPro Shopify app, which also runs affiliate codes), then choosing the gift products, discount settings and approval mode when you launch a gifting campaign. WooCommerce stores and ShipHero warehouses can receive gift orders too. What the connection can and cannot do is written up on the Cheerful + Shopify integration page. The whole gifting workflow, from outreach to reporting, is on the gifting page, and the manual version of the same sequence for Shopify stores is in how to get Instagram influencers to promote your Shopify store.

Frequently asked questions

Can Shopify orders for influencer gifting be created automatically?
The preparation can be fully automatic: the address is read from the creator’s reply and the order is drafted with the right variant. In Cheerful the order is then created in Shopify after one approval, in the app or from a daily Slack digest, as a $0 order with free shipping.
Does Cheerful create Shopify draft orders for gifting?
No. The draft lives in Cheerful until you approve it; Cheerful then creates a real Shopify order with the products at $0 and free shipping, tagged GIFTING-CHEERFUL by default, so it goes straight into your normal fulfilment.
How do I track sales from gifted influencers on Shopify?
Give each creator a unique discount code and match store orders to codes. Cheerful issues the codes automatically when a creator confirms, syncs your orders, and shows revenue per creator. It only sees sales where the code was used.
Does Cheerful send tracking numbers to creators?
No. It does not read tracking numbers from Shopify or send tracking links. Delivery status is picked up from the conversation, and you can have a follow-up email, which can include the creator’s discount code, go out a set number of hours after the order.
What is the best tool for influencer gifting and Shopify automation?
We make one (Cheerful), so weigh this accordingly: judge any tool on whether it creates the order rather than exporting a file, reads the address from the reply, handles the creator conversation, issues one code per creator, and matches store orders back to those codes.
